After serving his articles as clerk to HR (Bob) Hunt, founding partner of the Sydney firm Hunt & Hunt, David was admitted as an Attorney, Solicitor & Proctor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales on 19 March 1971.

Following admission he was offered an Associateship with the firm then known as Donald E Glasson & Gemmell, subsequently joining Donald Glasson and Malcolm Gemmell as a partner on 1 July 1972 when the firm’s name changed to Glasson Gemmell & McGill.
